Volunteer Policy

Purpose and Objectives
Volunteer roles are opportunities for members of the community to participate in helping to prepare, cook and serve meals to those in need. The subsequent duties to this involve cleaning, following strict food health and safety hygiene standards and are non-discriminatory or judgmental towards those we serve. Upholding a general sense of compassion towards those we serve and comradery with all volunteer.
This policy outlines the criteria that applies to volunteers on a range of issues and aims to provide an equitable and efficient mechanism for accepting and managing volunteers.
Application
This policy applies to all volunteers of Dig In: Inc and Management of Dig In: Inc involved in the engagement of volunteers.
Definitions
Volunteer is a person or organisation that freely takes part in Dig In: Inc in order to help serve the community, achieve a charitable purpose, achieve the satisfaction of giving back and to gain volunteering experience.
Reasons to Volunteer
Here are some benefits volunteers obtain and why people choose to volunteer for Dig In: Inc:
- Helping others less fortunate;
- Being involved in meaningful work;
- Making a positive difference to the lives of others;
- Enhancing personal development and building confidence;
- Gaining valuable work experience and learning new skills;
- Feeling valued and being a part of a team;
- Meeting new people and making new friends; and
- Being involved in something bigger than yourself and giving you a close connection to a wider community.
Recruitment
Applications to volunteer will be available on the respective Dig In: Inc websites. Tertiary institutions will also be approached to source students studying in areas related relevant to Dig In: Inc purpose and objectives.
Applicants will be required to submit an application form online or through their tertiary institution. Principals of equal employment opportunity will apply to the selection of volunteers. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age at the commencement of the voluntary appointment unless they are school or agency-based placements or have a parental waiver and consent form. Volunteer appointment will be made as necessary.
The following criteria may be used in selecting volunteers:
- a demonstrated interest in wanting to give back to those in need
- availability to volunteer at required times;
- commitment to the success of Dig In: Inc
- good communication and interpersonal skills; and
- non-judgemental towards those we serve.
Insurance Cover
Where volunteers are sourced from tertiary institutions, the tertiary institution will be responsible for arranging and financing appropriate insurance cover. Evidence of insurance cover must be received before the volunteer placement commences.
For all other volunteers, volunteers will only be engaged once Dig In: Inc has appropriate insurance in place, which is does in fact have.
Orientation and Training
The level of orientation and training will depend on the role to be undertaken by the volunteer. Each volunteer is required to take part in an orientation program which will cover issues including:
- an overview of Dig In: Inc;
- a snapshot of the Dig In: Inc, events and sponsors;
- details of the volunteer’s duties;
- the Code of Conduct; and
- practical issues including workplace, health and safety requirements, appropriate clothing, times, locations, contact details etc.
Recognition of Volunteer Contribution
Dig In: Inc recognises the valuable contribution volunteers provide to Dig In: Inc. Tangible recognition may be given in the following ways:
- certificate of appreciation;
- letter of reference; and/or
- Dig In: Inc T-shirt (if appropriate)

I have been given a copy of the Volunteer Policy and agree to accept all of its terms and conditions. I consent to submitting my volunteer application and accepting the Volunteer Policy and conditions by electronic means and in particular by ticking the acceptance digital box and will be bound by my acceptance. This agreement will be accepted and digitally signed by my action of ticking the digital box on the Camp Fire Volunteer Software. I agree to be bound by, have complied with and will comply with the Electronic Transactions (Queensland) Act 2001 (QLD).
